Half term usually falls in late October, and that timing suits Ibiza better than most parents assume. On land, late October means warm middays, low golden light and space. Beaches that demand a 9 a.m. arrival in August lie nearly empty. Waiters have time to joke with your kids. And the flight from the UK is only around two and a half hours — shorter than plenty of motorway journeys to a rainy cottage.
The honest side of the ledger: days are shorter, it cools quickly once the sun drops, and good weather comes in windows rather than guarantees. That's exactly why the boat day works best as the flexible centrepiece of the week, not a fixed appointment. More on that below.
One boat, two families: how the from-€999 maths works
We run a single boat: the NAVAN S30, a premium day boat for up to 10 guests, always with a professional skipper at the helm — you don't need a licence or any experience. From October a full day starts at €999 per boat, not per person, with fuel charged separately based on what we actually use. Two families of four or five fill the boat exactly, and the arithmetic lands near €100 per person for a private, skippered eight-hour day. The details that matter to parents are already on board: shade sails fore and aft, a private toilet below deck, a small double cabin where a tired toddler can nap out of the wind, snorkelling gear and a Bluetooth sound system for the inevitable requests. Add the inflatable SUP for €50 and "I'm bored" doesn't stand a chance.
What a late-October boat day actually looks like
A few days out, our skipper starts reading the forecast and picks the coast to match — there's nearly always a sheltered side of the island to work with, and the east coast around Santa Eulalia is our home water. We leave from Marina Santa Eulalia, Berth H17, with parking at the marina and the town a short stroll away.
A typical day: a mid-morning departure over flat water, an easy cruise past Cala Llonga or up towards Tagomago, the private island about 20 minutes from our berth. Then the anchor chain rattles out in a cove you'll probably have entirely to yourselves. We schedule the swim stop for midday on purpose — sun at its highest, water at its friendliest. The kids are usually in before the ladder is fully down; the adults follow, or supervise from the teak platform with a coffee in hand. Nobody swims for an hour the way they do in August. Nobody seems to mind, either.

The rest of the week, honestly
Santa Eulalia makes an easy family base in autumn: a long, flat promenade built for scooters and ice creams, a sandy beach right by the town, and a marina to wander in the evening. Ibiza Town and the walls of Dalt Vila are a rewarding outing; the north of the island is at its best now for a slow drive and a lunch inland.
Be realistic about closures: from mid-October a fair share of beach restaurants and hotels wind down for the year. We never assume a particular kitchen is open in autumn — we check before we set a course, and where service is still running our team can reserve a table in advance. Build the week around what's open rather than an August bucket list and you'll eat well every day.
Practical notes from the crew
- Book the boat day early in your week. If the forecast argues, there are still days left to shift to — that flexibility is the biggest luxury of the quiet season.
- Pack layers, not just swimwear. T-shirt at anchor, jumper underway, and towels for the shivering sprint from ladder to sunpad.
- Keep the morning calm. Mornings usually bring the flattest sea; we'd rather leave at 10:00 and be swinging at anchor by 11 than chase the afternoon.
- Let the skipper decide the route on the day. That's not a limitation — it's the reason a late-October boat day so often simply comes off.
