Driving yourself is a different story: Spanish law does allow licence-free rentals, but only inside a tight box — small boats, modest engines, a handful of passengers, and an obligation to stay close to the shore. Once you see what that box excludes around Ibiza, the skippered day stops looking like a compromise and starts looking like the whole point.
What Spanish law allows without a license
You can legally hire certain boats in Spain with no license and no exam — that part is true, and rental companies advertise it heavily. The catch sits in the conditions attached. Licence-free boats are deliberately kept small and low-powered, they may only carry a limited number of people, and — the restriction that matters most around here — they have to stay within a narrow band along the coast. The exact figures are technical and get revised from time to time, so any operator will confirm the current details for their own fleet. The practical picture, though, has been stable for years: a licence-free boat is a pottering boat. Fine for a slow hour along a familiar beach; not built — or allowed — to take you anywhere ambitious.
Rent a boat in Ibiza without a license, and here is what you would miss
Draw that coastal band on a chart of Ibiza and you notice something uncomfortable: the island's best days on the water all fall outside it. From our berth — H17, Marina Santa Eulalia — three examples make it concrete:
- Tagomago. The small island off the northeast coast is only about 20 minutes from our marina, yet it lies offshore — beyond where a self-drive rental may go. Close enough to see, legally out of reach.
- Formentera and S'Espalmador. The crossing to the Formentera lagoon is a genuine open-water passage, and licence-free boats cannot make it. That is precisely why the lagoon feels so different when you arrive on your own keel.
- Es Vedrà and the west coast. The full-day run past the Dalt Vila silhouette and around the southern tip to Es Vedrà, Cala d'Hort, Cala Comte and Cala Bassa covers a huge stretch of coastline. The first sight of Es Vedrà rising out of the sea is worth the trip on its own — and it is nowhere near the zone a licence-free boat may use.
The skippered charter: same sea, none of the limits
A boat with a professional skipper is regulated completely differently, because the qualification is already on board — the skipper's. That single fact removes every restriction above. What the skipper actually does all day
Far more than steering. He has read the wind forecast before you are awake and knows which side of the island will be calm. He threads the boat out of the marina while you are still arguing over the first song, holds the course on the Simrad chartplotter while you stretch out on the bow, and picks the anchorage to match the conditions rather than the postcard. At S'Espalmador he cuts the engines, and for a moment the only sound is the anchor chain running out over bright sand. So — do you need a license?
For the Ibiza most people actually come for: no. You need the skipper, not the license. A licence-free rental is a pleasant toy for a calm hour close to a familiar beach — nothing wrong with that. But Formentera, Es Vedrà and even nearby Tagomago are simply not on its menu, legally or practically. Two pieces of advice, whoever you book with: ask who is driving, and ask exactly what the quoted price includes. If the answer to the first question is "a professional skipper, included", the second answer tends to be more honest too.
